PEN-200 establishes core penetration testing skills such as enumeration, exploitation, privilege escalation, Active Directory, and reporting. PEN-300 builds on that foundation by concentrating on advanced techniques for bypassing security mechanisms, developing customized attack tooling, advanced lateral movement, and compromising hardened enterprise environments.
Yes. The curriculum covers antivirus evasion, AMSI, application whitelisting, PowerShell restrictions, process injection, in-memory execution, and other techniques used to bypass security mechanisms. The objective is primarily to understand and bypass controls that are designed to block offensive techniques, rather than simply teaching how to evade a blue team.
Active Directory is a significant part of the course. Learners progress from credential and lateral-movement techniques into advanced AD exploitation, Kerberos delegation, object permissions, forest trusts, and multi-forest compromise. A foundational understanding of AD and basic AD attacks is therefore strongly recommended before starting the course.
Programming becomes substantially more important at this level. Learners work with scripting and custom tooling across environments, with Bash, Python, PowerShell, JavaScript, and C# appearing throughout the course. OffSec specifically identifies familiarity with C# as a plus for PEN-300.
The OSEP exam simulates a corporate network inside a private VPN. Candidates must apply advanced penetration testing techniques to achieve objectives presented through the exam control panel. The assessment emphasizes practical exploitation, chaining techniques, lateral movement, and demonstrating successful compromise rather than answering theoretical questions.
